We are specialists in veterinary pathology and are committed to providing accurate and dependable diagnoses.
We have a team of board-certified veterinary pathology experts for each subspecialty of diagnosis, who have contributed to the development of several diagnostic guidelines.
We are an internationally recognised reference centre for the immunocytochemical diagnosis of lymphoma.
We actively participate in research studies and international training programmes.

Barbara Bacci

Barbara attained her undergraduate degree from the University of Bologna in 2003, followed by the completion of her PhD in Veterinary Anatomical Pathology in 2007 at the same institution. Her doctoral thesis focused on feline pulmonary tumours and mesotheliomas. Achieving the status of ECVP Diplomate in 2010, Barbara simultaneously pursued a Specialization Diploma in Public Health during the same year.
Between 2007 and 2010, Barbara served as a Pathologist in a private laboratory in Italy. Subsequently, she transitioned to the role of Senior Lecturer of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Melbourne in Australia, holding this position from 2010 to 2015. From 2015 to 2018, she continued her academic journey as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Pathology at the University of Surrey in the UK.
Since 2018, Barbara has held the position of Associate Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Bologna in Italy. Her research focus spans small animal and equine oncologic pathology, with a particular emphasis on Papillomavirus-induced tumours. Additionally, Barbara is actively involved in exploring the applications of artificial intelligence in pathology.
Chiara Giudice

Chiara earned her Veterinary Medicine degree in 1997 from the University of Milan, where she also completed her PhD in Comparative Pathology of Domestic and Wild Animals.
In 2009, she successfully passed the ECVP certification exam.
Currently, Chiara serves as an Associate Professor of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Milan. Additionally, she holds the role of ECVO internship supervisor for the ocular pathology program.
Danilo Gouveia Wasques
American Specialist in Veterinary Pathology

Danilo completed his Veterinary Medicine degree at the University of São Paulo in 2008 and completed his residency in veterinary at Londrina State University in 2010, with special focus on pathological anatomy. Since then, he has worked mainly in histopathology and cytology of small companion animals. Danilo subsequently obtained a master’s degree in Comparative and Experimental Pathology from the University of São Paulo in 2018, and moved to the UK the following year. He became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathology in 2021.
Over the years, he has garnered experience as a pathologist in various laboratories, including Histopet – Veterinary Pathology from 2012 to 2019, NationWide Laboratories from 2019 to 2022, and CVS Group Plc from 2022 to present.
Giancarlo Avallone

Professor Giancarlo Avallone earned his Veterinary Medicine degree in 2004 from the University of Milan, where he participated in a combined PhD/Residency program. In 2009, he successfully completed the ECVP certification exam. In 2011, he transitioned to the University of Bologna, where he presently serves as an Associate Professor, Head of the Pathology Service, and Director of the ECVP residency program.
Professor Avallone has made significant contributions to the field, being the author of numerous scientific publications. He has also co-authored recent classifications of soft tissue tumours and bone tumours.
Giovanni Burrai

Giovanni graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Sassari (Uniss) in 2006. He subsequently earned the title of Specialist in Animal Health, Breeding, and Zootechnical Production in 2011, followed by a PhD in Reproduction, Production, and Animal Welfare in 2014.
Over the years, Giovanni conducted research at in various universities, including Purdue, Liverpool and Bologna. In 2020, he achieved the European Diploma in Veterinary Pathology (ECVP). He is now an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Uniss, where he has developed specific expertise in the histopathology of domestic, wild, and laboratory animals.
Giovanni has authored over 50 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals and in national and international conference proceedings.
Martina Dettwiler

Martina graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Zurich in 2006 and went on to complete her PhD, focusing on apoptosis-related proteins in canine lymphoma, in 2013.
In 2014, she achieved the ECVP qualification, becoming a specialist in veterinary pathology. Her career as a pathologist includes positions at laboratories such as Idexx Diavet (2015-2016), the University of Bern (2016-2021), and Antech Diagnostics (since 2022).
In 2021, she took a significant step in her professional journey by founding the Vetscope Pathologie Dettwiler laboratory, where she currently works and continues to contribute to the field of veterinary pathology.
Maria Gaspar
Junior Clinical Pathology

Maria attained her integrated master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.
She served as a DVM at several veterinary clinics in Portugal.
Currently, she holds the position of Clinical Pathologist at Vedis.
Nazaré Pinto da Cunha

Nazaré graduated in Veterinary Medicine from ICBAS in 2005 and later earned a PhD in Animal Pathology from the University of Milan in 2010.
Following her academic achievements, she completed a residency at the University of Milan by the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ECVCP), becoming the first Portuguese European specialist in Veterinary Clinical Pathology in 2011.
Throughout her career, Nazaré engaged in various international training periods, gaining experience in England, Australia, Italy, and the United States, where she conducted her residency and doctoral research at UCDavis, California.
Nazaré actively contributes to the field as a member of the Executive Committee of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ESVCP). She has organized numerous training meetings, including the European Congress in Lisbon in 2023.
Her academic contributions extend to being the author of several articles published in international journals, a guest speaker at national and international conferences and courses, and a scientific reviewer.
As a founding partner of the Vedis laboratory, Nazaré currently serves as the clinical director. Simultaneously, she holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Lusófona University.
Roberta Rasotto
EBVS® and RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Pathology

Roberta earned her Veterinary Medicine degree in 2007 from the University of Padua, where she also completed her PhD on histomorphology of canine mammary tumours.
From 2008 to 2012 Roberta trained as a Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist at the University of Padua and the University of Milan in Italy. In 2010 she also spent 6 months as visiting scholar at University of Pennsylvania (USA). In 2012 Roberta became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). From 2013 to 2019, Roberta served as an anatomical pathologist in the histology laboratory of two small animal referral hospitals in the UK, namely the Animal Health Trust and Dick White Referrals.
In 2019, Roberta returned to her home country, Italy. Despite the geographical shift, Roberta maintained her collaboration with Dick White Referrals laboratory, contributing remotely as a histopathology consultant, specializing in digital pathology.
Roberta is a member of the Oncology Pathology Working Group, which is a joint initiative of the Veterinary Cancer Society and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. She is also a prolific author, having published several articles in the field of veterinary oncological pathology, with a specific focus on mammary tumours and mast cell tumours.
Roberta’s expertise is widely recognized, as evidenced by her specialist status in Veterinary Pathology awarded by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Roberta has also served for 5 years as member of the Examination Committee of the ECVP and she is currently a member of the Editorial Board of Veterinary Pathology.
Sara Belluco

Sara graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 2002 from the University of Milan, where she also completed her PhD focusing on Spontaneous Pathologies of the laboratory rat.
In 2009, she successfully passed the ECVP certification exam.
Presently, Sara holds the position of assistant professor of Veterinary Pathology at Vetagro Sup in France.
Stefania Gasparini

Stefania earned her degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua in 2012. Following this, she completed her PhD in 2015 at the Institute of Veterinary Pathology at the University of Zurich, focusing on the pathogenesis of dilated cardiomyopathy in canines.
In 2020, Stefania successfully passed the ECVP certification exam, obtaining the title of Specialist in Veterinary Pathology.
Presently, she is actively engaged in her role at the San Marco Veterinary Laboratory in Italy. In this capacity, Stefania conducts histological and cytological diagnoses, performs necropsies on small animals, and contributes to ongoing research activities.
Valeria Baldassarre

Valeria graduated in veterinary medicine in 2010 from the University of Pisa.
In 2016, she became a specialist in Veterinary Pathology after successfully passing the ECVP certification exam.
In 2023, she completed her doctorate in Veterinary Science at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Reproduction at the University of Naples.
Valeria has an extensive professional background, having worked as an anatomical pathologist in various laboratories. Notable among them are the San Marco laboratory in Veggiano (2011-2019), the University of Naples (2020-2022), and as a histopathology consultant at EVRPS (2017-2018).
